WiltMan is the one-man project of Ghent-based Wim Kesteloot, who – or so we suspect – put this EP together entirely on his own. At least that’s what you might gather from the rather rudimentary songs and synthetic beats. To immediately throw it onto the pile of well-meant but not very exciting releases would be a shame, because Lo-Files 01 is a particularly fine release that unfolds as an intriguing piece of listening cinema, drawing influences from Americana and noir, and then presenting a very personal variant drenched in twang and atmosphere. Think Marc Ribot (for the guitar tone), Flying Horseman (for the mood and background details), and here and there even the more experimental side of Los Lobos (every now and then you get that Kiko vibe).
But that’s not the whole story, because opener Cast Of Rome starts from a typical post-punk sound before landing in Lynchian mystery, while the reverb guitars of second standout Hush are constantly supplemented by fragments of stray TV dialogues. All you need to add is the image of suburban boredom.
A couple of songs – the jazzy Big Mouth Bird and SixMiles, decorated with a repeating piano motif – feel somewhat unfinished, but that is partly what defines the charm of Lo-Files 01. Or, as the closing track Know-Where (also the only track with vocals) puts it: “Gotta know where to begin.” And here, that worked out very well.

Wiltman, the nom de plume of Ghent-based singer-songwriter Wim Kesteloot, recently released his third album. For the third time under the name Lo-Files (I, II & III). And for the third time self-released.
Wiltman is just one of the musical paths Kesteloot explores, far removed from the banality of everyday life. Formerly active with the Americana combo Viper Rosa and as frontman of the rock band Agent Wander, he has for some time now been working mainly as a composer for theatre productions. More a studio man/sound architect than—uh—stage performer, then. Each to his own.

The third installment of the Lo-Files series connects seamlessly with its two predecessors, though the spirit of Ry Cooder perhaps wanders through it a little less explicitly than before. This time melody takes precedence over mood, though the guitar work, the softly humming vocals, and the samples still invariably result in subtle soundscapes. Musical landscapes that call to mind the dusty Midwest rather than the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt where this was recorded.
A fine piece of art, highly enjoyable. The perfect companion for a gloomy Sunday afternoon in the onset of autumn. In short: get this record into your home! Anyone wanting the CD will have to be quick, as only 150 were pressed.
